DUB Magazine Feature : Jermaine Dupri

Self-described as young, fly and flashy, Jermaine Dupri isn’t one to shy away from attention. Take for example his 2007 Bentley Continental GT convertible, which has headrests brazenly embroidered with the iconic So So Def Afroman.

The mellow fellow with the So So Def afro and shades chills on the Bentley headrests, nonchalantly looking out for anyone that might stop and gawk. Go ahead. Dupri wants you stare. “A lot of people would probably think that’s a little ghetto, or they think it’s a little over the top,” he said. “But that’s the flashiness. Sometimes, people say they don’t want people to know that’s their car; I want you to know that’s my car sitting outside the club. Now, if you walk up and you’re, ‘Whose car is this?’ Then, you see the afro…it’s undeniable. You know whose car it is…”

To be honest, it’s almost impossible to ignore the allure of a Bentley, but thanks to Platinum Motorsport, Dupri’s 2007 GTC stands high above the rest, from the bottom, up. The GTC was equipped with Continental ContiSportContact 2 265/30R22 front and 295/25R22 rear tires with 22-inch Lowenhart LT8 wheels that were each custom-finished with a diamond face with black windows and black lip. Inside, in addition to the custom headrests, the GTC’s wood grain was painted black lacquer.

The GTC was lowered with a Platinum Motorsport lowering module, and all chrome moldings were painted black while the grille was painted black and white. It was also dressed up with a full Mansory body kit, including front and rear bumpers, rocker panels and spoiler. Add a complete Mansory exhaust system with Mansory exhaust tips, and smoked taillights and that GTC looks razor sharp.

Hard to believe, but even this GTC seems modest when compared to Dupri’s other car, a ferocious 2006 Lamborghini Murciélago Roadster. “The kinds of vehicles that I have are pretty much for the summer, basically,” Dupri said regarding the pair of convertibles. “If y’all remember my last car, I’m all in white—that’s just my favorite color for a car. But these cars are just summer cars.”

The crew at Platinum took the Murc and added just enough to enhance what already approaches perfection. Maya MRS 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels, each with a black lip, were mounted onto the Murc and wrapped in Pirelli PZero Rosso 245/30R19 front and 345/25R20 rear tires. A custom front lip was then molded onto the original bumper, and a custom exhaust system with custom 5-inch ceramic-coated flat black exhaust tips was installed. A Platinum Motorsport lowering module gives it a more predatory stance, while smoked headlights, taillights and reflectors give off an air of menace as it tears down the road.

With this pair—the Bentley GTC and Murciélago Roadster—Dupri has effectively covered his requirements for a car. “The three F’s—fly, fast and fun—that’s what I need in a car; a car that’s foreign, that people will want to look at, that feels good to drive; that’s fun to drive, that’s fast,” he said. “Those cars exuberate all that…the fastness, the fun and the flyness.”

By the way, Dupri isn’t your casual automobile aficionado who gets by just breezing through a catalog; the man knows his stuff, and he loves cars. So, when Dupri is passionate about something automobile-related, it’s best to sit down and take notes. The man who once said that it’s imperative to own a Mercedes-Benz because a Benzo is a rapper’s car remains adamant.

“It’s still like that,” he said with a grin. “A Benz, ultimately, is the ultimate car. They’ve got so many different versions of cars that you can find one that will fit your flyness, or whatever it is that you prefer. The Maybach, the two-seater SL, the McLaren—there are a lot of different Mercedes. The four-door 500 is crazy. My homeboy got one that just really makes me want a new one.” But, Dupri already has a 500 back home—the So So Def Blue 500 that he keeps as his studio car and only drives from the studio and back to his house, just to listen to his music. “Every time I get in it, it’s still a Benz,” he said. “The car is made so well; it’s hard for me not to want one.”

For most people, this pair of high-end vehicles would be two dreams come true, but when you’re Jermaine Dupri, your dreams reach higher. “I don’t really have a dream vehicle,” he admitted. “I’d say my dream vehicle is probably a plane. I would get a white G5—that’s probably the dream vehicle, just to own a plane. Because all the cars…I’ve pretty much had everything.”

However, Dupri also mentioned that he got out of the car game for a while, that he’d just buy cars and ride them, without much thought into customization. However, when summer hit, the desire would come rushing back, and with the help of Platinum, Dupri began exploring customizing options. “I had kinda got out of that because the older you get, the more you get out of it,” he said. “I’ve been doing this since I was 19. My first cover with DUB, I had, what, five cars on the cover?

“At some point in your life, if you collect cars the way I do, and you buy cars the way I do, you start hitting the club, and that’s the $200K Club—that’s what I call that,” Dupri continued. “There aren’t too many cars you can get if you want to be in the $200K Club. That’s basically what I got into and started playing around. I was just telling them that I’m about to get a white Bugatti Veyron 16.4.” He pauses for a moment and smiles. “That’ll shut the street down. That’ll be the end of the show.”

Flashy? Dupri is as flashy as a supernova. His unrestrained attitude shines through in his cars, which set the roads on fire. “My style is young, fly and flashy,” he said. “That’s pretty much the definition of me. People know I’ve been having cars for a minute…and I want them to know that it’s my car sitting out in front of the club like that, in the valet, while they can’t get in.”
