At 1 p.m., 29-year-old Floyd Mayweather Jr. is just waking up in his Las Vegas, Nevada mansion. Before dressing his two sons, Koraun, 8, and Shamaree, 6, for a trip to the gym, he jumps on an international conference call. His advisor and CEO of Mayweather Promotions (Leonard Ellerbe), co-promoter and president of Golden Boy Promotions (Oscar De La Hoya), and publicist (Kelly Swanson) are all on the line as he prepared to answer questions from the press about his upcoming fight—the fastest selling in boxing history—against unbeaten English welterweight contender Ricky “The Hitman” Hatton, on Saturday, December 8.
Although Mayweather and De La Hoya had a long-time rivalry, most notably the Cinco De Mayo bout when the acclaimed fighters battled (resulting in a loss for De La Hoya), the pugilists came to an agreement: it makes more dollars—and sense—to join forces than be adversaries. It’s all about the Benjamins for Mayweather, who recently dropped the moniker “Pretty Boy,” replacing it with “Money.”
The press typically tends to ask hard-hitting questions when it pertains to the world’s best pound-for-pound fighter. During the conference call, apparently, the media turned their pessimism into optimism and praise—unlike the numerous conferences prior to his recent victorious bouts against De La Hoya, Carlos Baldomir, Zab Judah, Sharmba Mitchell, Arturo Gatti and a host of others. No harsh questions were asked, which resulted in less skepticism for the six-time world champion (in five different weight classes) about his hard-nosed opponent, whose flawless, 43-0 record includes 31 knockouts within the past decade. Instead, interest ran more toward Mayweather’s role as a contestant on ABC Network’s Dancing with the Stars—a situation Ellerbe says he spent a year working on.
Mayweather considers the fourth-week elimination of he and dancing partner Karina Smirnoff (which he says made him “truly, truly upset”) a biased result of judges basing their scores on his “bad guy” persona from HBO’s 24/7 series and not his fancy footwork on the ballroom floor. Still, the press expressed admiration. “I’m so proud of you,” said one reporter. “You had my vote,” said another. Perhaps the words he consistently preaches to the press, “You guys need to be more positive,” have finally penetrated their minds?
“I don’t just talk the talk; I walk the walk,” he explained to DUB later that evening while at a 24 Hour Fitness Center in Las Vegas (his second trip to the gym that day). “Having been involved with the sport for 20 years, dedicating myself to boxing, it’s truly amazing to do the things that I’ve done. It’s just hard work and God-given talent, and I’m going to continue to say my prayers and be the best than I can be. As for Dancing with the Stars, I’m not too hardcore to go out and ballroom dance. Doing hip-hop dances is easy. I’m trying to set an example for young kids to think outside of the box. I’m confident in myself as a man, so I’m very comfortable with it.”
Earlier in the week, Mayweather met with presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama. Although Mayweather couldn’t disclose all of the details that took place during the private meeting that required HBO’s 24/7 camera crew to cease filming during their discussion, he was very proud that the senator requested his presence. “It’s great to see someone that comes from where I come from doing such great things,” Mayweather said. “It was an honor to sit and talk with him. I’m encouraging everyone from the ages of 18 to 34 to get out there and vote and have a voice in whomever they elect to represent the country.”
These days Mayweather prides himself on being an A-lister with a fortune he estimates at nearly $100 million. The house is paid for, along with the majority of his $4 million car collection. “A couple of the cars we lease, just to keep our credit right, but we don’t have to,” he said. “The last Maybach I bought, I spent $411,000 cash. The McLaren, I spent a half million cash. Whatever I want, I go out there and buy.” Floyd upgraded from the Ferrari 360 Spider he posed with on the April 2006 cover of DUB to a custom-painted 2006 Ferrari F430 coupe with his “MAYWEATHER” lettering posted on back as it is with his entire collection. “I see it’s obvious that I’m a trendsetter,” he said confidently. “Now everybody wants to put their names on the back of their cars. That’s something that I’ve been doing since I was 21.”
His 2007 Mercedes-Benz S 550 features a body kit with parts taken from Lorinser, FAB Design and Brabus, with 22-inch NC Forged wheels and Michelin tires. “My everyday car is the 2007 Rolls-Royce Phantom,” he says. The black Phantom, with seats that are covered in black mink, sits on black, 24-inch NC Forged Xtreme 12 wheels and Michelin tires. “It’s either the Phantom or the Maybach 62,” he adds. “Both of my Maybachs (the 57 and 62) have mink front seats. I plan on putting chinchilla on the seats of my McLaren as well.”
Mayweather’s 2006 Mercedes-Benz CL 65 AMG biturbo has a full Lorinser body kit, sits on 20-inch GFG Klessig-5 wheels with Dunlop SP Sport 9000 tires and produces 612 horsepower and 723 lb.-ft. of torque that speeds the Benz from 0-60 mph in 4.3 seconds. His 2006 white Bentley GT coupe is equipped with a Mansory body kit and 22-inch NC Forged wheels. “I got the Mansory kit on my car, and then I see people around here want to go and get the kit and decorate their cars like I decorate mine,” he said. For that reason, shortly after the shoot, Mayweather sold the Bentley.
“The list goes on and on with the cars that I have,” he says. “I got two Cadillac trucks. I don’t know, man; I got so many cars. I can’t name them all. I probably got 15 or 16. I don’t really drive anymore. I get driven in the 62. Lately, my guys are driving. I let all my dudes drive all my cars. I let them stunt.”
In addition to having some fly rides, Mayweather’s crib is just as impressive, costing him $4.5 million. Growing up, he had to share a one bedroom with his mother.“We lived seven-deep in a one bedroom,” he remembered. “When I’m sitting in my crib, I think about that all of the time, which is what makes me strive harder. I like everything about my mansion. It’s a one-story, 12,000 square-foot estate. It has five bedrooms and five bathrooms and a 10-car garage. It’s very classy.” He also has a 100-inch Sony flat screen TV in the living room, built-in fireplace encased in marble and custom wooden blinds throughout the house. “What makes my house different from every other athlete and entertainer is that they live in a big box,” he said. “Look at the architecture. It’s extremely beautiful.”
The outside is just as beautiful as the inside, with a pool that is bigger than most people’s backyards. “If it doesn’t have a pool, then it’s not a mansion,” he said. “It’s 6 feet in one area. It’s nice for my kids. It even has the hot tub where the water drips into the pool.”
Even though his bankroll is high, he still doesn’t let the money make him. What good would a big house be with no friends or family to share it with? “It feels more comfortable when I have friends around who come from the same background that I come from,” he said. “They can understand the struggle. That’s the most important thing to me. Life isn’t all about materialistic things. I’ve been truly blessed and I’m very thankful for it.”

Shame on you for using mink coat in your car, which you hardly drive. Killing animals for fur to wear or to sit on is immorally wrong and cruel. You are in essence promoting animal cruelty and setting negative influence for kids. I find it disgusting that animals are killed just for their fur because selfish people like you feel you have to look good and that animals can’t feel pain. It takes more than 60-80 minks to make one coat and to cover your car seats; probably more than 400 minks had to die for your selfishness. I hope karma will catch up with you 10 folds.
